Hives are also acknowledged as Urticaria, and caused by an allergic reaction within the body. Histamine is the responsible chemical which is released from the body and accumulates beneath the skin and causes pharmacological alterations and changes.  The primary and foremost symptoms shown by the hives are redness of the skin followed by swelling of affected area. This reddened inflamed skin is called as wheal and this patchy swelled area is surrounded by the dark red circle known as flair. These hives can diverge from small patchy spot to big ones which can even go to few inches in diameter. The residence time of hives varies from patient to patient that is they may develop and disappear within no time and can come back again. The occurrence of the hives is all of a sudden. Hives are typically not severe and be treated easily. When the hives retains for longer time they can become severe and can require urgent physician support.

Maximum hives are caused due to medicine we use in regular living and due to various bacterial, fungal and viral infections. In such cases the time of lasting is about 3-4 days may continue for few weeks but not more than 6 weeks. Some hives may occur due to reaction with food and reside for several weeks. Chronic hives may occur in children and can long last more than 45 days and can act as on and off for several months with pain and itch.

Second drug is corticosteroids which are preferred for patients which do not respond to antihistamine treatments. Other some precautions should always be kept in mind like avoiding allergens, pollens, over the counter medicine, canned foods etc.
